Growth and development in Developing countries Research Proposal
Growth and development in Developing countries - Research Proposal Example It is admissible that the current economic situation appears even more uncertain. The Government has repeatedly stated that the country is experiencing a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expansion of 7% annually. However, the economy appears to be struggling thus presenting challenges to the development of the country (Diejomaoh, 2005; p. 77). It appears that with these predicaments the country is still realizing some level of growth and development. Much as Nigeria continues to record growth in some sectors amid the economic challenges, questions emerge as to whether there is a proportional rate of development (AfDB, 2012; p. 157). This research proposal seeks to assess the relationship between growth and development in Nigeria while factoring in the economic crisis that appears to have persisted. Aims 1. To assess the relationship between growth and development in Nigeria and determine whether the current economic crisis has positive impact in the development of the country. Objectives 1. To assess the level of growth and development in Nigeria 2. To determine whether the economic crisis facing Nigeria has any impact on growth and development 3. To determine the source of growth and development in Nigeria apart from the government 4. To recommend ways of achieving growth and development even amid economic challenges Research Questions 1. ... There are concerns that the country is recording growth without development and economy appears to be on the downturn. Nigeria presently faces diverse challenges to the expansion of her economy including religious hostility, kidnappings, violence, fraud, and poverty (Oxford Business Group, 2010; p. 58). Considered one of the best growing economies globally, Nigeriaââ¬â¢s development is paradoxical (Adediji, 2012; 79). This is because most of the people who qualify for employment are jobless thus making meaningless contribution to the economic development (Robinson, 2012) and (Johnson, 2011). Nigeria has a poverty index of 60 percent and the exchange rates are Naira (N) 162 against the dollar. Furthermore, the country has low foreign reserves approximating to $38 billion (NBS. 2012). According to 2011 financial reports, Nigeria inflation stood at 10.3 percent while in 2012 it soared to 12.7 percent (CBN, 2012; p. 57). This is an indication that the country is not doing better econo mically and as more of her citizens continue to become jobless, the growth and development may just be a myriad (Nwosi, 2011; p. 47). It is apparent that these challenges are stifling the development of Nigeria (Akinpelu, 2011; p. 31). It appears that the notable growth in the sectors is driven by other factors. The business community in Nigeria is accumulating massive financial resources that they also invest in the country (IBRU, 2007). The investors in the country are conducting business activities in the oil industry, the agriculture sector, and the real estate industry. Therefore, the growth observed relate to the efforts of the investors engaging in the expansion of their businesses (Menjah and Abor, 2012; p. 68). This

Discuss and evaluate the problems faced by project managers Essay - 1
Discuss and evaluate the problems faced by project managers - Essay Example The major assumptions have to be documented as they impact the planning and estimation process. Assumptions also imply a degree of risk and hence all members of the team should understand the assumptions involved in project planning. Projects are not only about managing change but also about managing relationships and managing uncertainty (Bourne & Walker, 2005). The construction and defense industries have been the primary users have been the primary users of project management to deliver outcomes. Projects are usually tangible having straightforward ââ¬Å"command and control structuresâ⬠where authority and responsibility is appropriately balanced. However, the situation became difficult and managing change became difficult as organizations moved from relatively simple functional structure to the complexity of the matrix structure. The changed business environment requires a different management paradigm. The paradox of project control is that the project manager has to be vi gil in controlling the outcome of the project amidst change and uncertainty when the project manager is himself affected b y the same change and uncertainty. ... Project teams Projects create a scenario in which constant diffusion of knowledge and emergent working practices result as a complex interplay between constantly changing project conditions and an indeterminate and shifting organizational terrain (Bresnen, Goussevskaia & Swan 2004). The construction industry for one encompasses a wide range of activities and hence the form of organization depends upon the size of the project, type and scale of the work undertaken. Projects may have non-routine project processes in addition to complex inter-professional and inter-organizational contractual working relationships. Project teams are heterogeneous and comprise of people from different professional and organizational backgrounds. Movement of staff between projects is common. Project organizations require a de-centralized team-working. A team has been defined as an energetic group of people committed to achieving common objectives and who enjoy working together thereby also producing qualit y outcomes (Aurthur, Wall & Halligan, 2003). Moreover the project manager should be able to encourage and reinforce localized action. The new management initiatives can bring about success when there is decentralization, short-term emphasis on project performance and distributed work practices. Project teams comprise of a unique group of individuals who work together in a controlled environment towards a common goal (Atkins & Gilbert, 2003). Each member of the team contributes their knowledge or expertise to solve a jointly owned problem (McGreevy, 2006). The very idea of a project team is to enable multiple perspectives, different functions, variety of experiences and a broad skill set which has a bearing on the project (Hacker,

The Lunar Landing Hoax Theory - Evidence Pro and Con Essay -- Argument
The Lunar Landing Hoax Theory - Evidence Pro and Con A cash reward of $100,000 was offered to anyone who could prove, with conclusive physical evidence, the existence of the moon. This reward still remains unclaimed ("The Moon-The Real Truth"). After all, how does one know for sure the moon even exists? Even if it does exist, how does one prove it? That's what NASA set out to do in the late 1960's. On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong planted the first human footprints in the lunar soil. The United States had accomplished their goal in sending men to the moon. They managed to not only send them 238,857 mi. (384,403 km) into space to our neighbor celestial body, but also send them back with a successful flight to our mother earth. This seems like a difficult task for a country that was behind Russia in space exploration at the time. So, did NASA actually have enough technology to do this? Even though many Americans believe that the United States sent men to the moon in 1969, there are a few who believe that the moon landing was a hoax. A 1999 Gallup poll showed that 6% of Americans have doubts about the moon landing. Even though 6% of Americans doesn't sound like a lot, it translates to millions of people (Plait). It would have been easier to fake all the photographs in the Nevada desert in Area 51 than to actually perform the mission to the moon. However, NASA did indeed have the technology in the late 1960's to send men to the moon, and all the evidence they brought back proves it. On July 16, 1969 the space ship Apollo 11 left from Kennedy Space Center en route to the moon. The crew consisted of Neil A. Armstrong, the commander; Edwin E. Aldrin, the jr. lunar module pilot; and Michael Collins, the commander module pilot... ...aphs and videos ("Proof"). This is a matter of physics. No one can physically prove that the US landed on the moon. So, will Americans ever know the real truth about the moon landings? What one's eyes see, one believes. So, from all the evidence that NASA obtained, it proves that they really did send men to the moon in 1969. Works Cited "Apollo Investigation." Is this an accurate assessment of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth? Essay
In retrospect Macbeth does not embody the traits of a butcher at the start of the play but the chain of events he and his wife set in motion, changes him into a remorseless killer. A butcher by trade kills for necessity, shows no remorse or conscience and is pitiless. However, Macbeth is persuaded by his selfish, ambitious wife to perform these terrible deeds against his moral standards. Once Macbeth crosses the moral boundary of taking someoneââ¬â¢s life, he loses all sense of right and wrong. A domino effect is created whereby the loss of one life automatically leads on to mass murder in that he tries to eliminate all contenders to the throne i.e. the slaughter of the innocents (Macduffââ¬â¢s wife and children). During the course of the play, Macbeth and his wife have a role reversal-she develops a conscience after her initial lust for blood and descends into madness whereupon she kills herself. She is no longer the fiend-like queen, but a pathetic creature full of delusions (ââ¬Å"Out, damned spot!â⬠) who almost demands pity from the onlooker. Macbeth however, has taken total control of the situation and cannot step back now that he has gone so far. Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s statement,â⬠Whatââ¬â¢s done cannot be undone,â⬠is appropriate here. Consequently, Macduffââ¬â¢s quotation, ââ¬Å"This dead butcher and fiend-like queenâ⬠, is not wholly true. Upon hearing of the witches prophecies, Lady Macbeth instantly conspires to speed up events so that Macbeth becomes king quickly. She believes that she is speeding up fate, but all she is in fact doing is playing out the prophecy exactly. He lacks the necessary ruthlessness that accompanies ambition- ââ¬Å"Thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but without The illness should attend it;â⬠but she can supply that for him. She is fiend-like in the way she manipulates her husband, a shrew brow-beating him into these acts. He is merely her instrument carrying through her plans. At the moment, she is the power behind the throne. At face value, she is ââ¬Ëegging onââ¬â¢ her husband for what looks to be his own gains, but it is her ambition to be the most powerful woman in Scotland. She is furthering her own ambitious plans perhaps wanting to rule the country through Macbeth. It is ironic when she says, ââ¬Å"Look like the innocent flower But be the serpent underââ¬â¢tâ⬠, as she herself is the ââ¬Ëserpentââ¬â¢, the brains behind the plan. He slavishly does her bidding despite having some misgivings, â⬠We will proceed no further in this business:â⬠. She undermines his manhood using it as a weapon against him, ââ¬Å"When you durst do it, then you were a man; And, to be more than what you were, you would Be so much more the man.â⬠She adopts the masculine characteristics of courage, strength and determination and encourages him to proceed with the actions. She bolsters his frail ego. Although he has slain many people in battle, he is known to be a loyal servant and is afraid of being branded a traitor. He recognises Duncanââ¬â¢s valued opinion of him, ââ¬Å"He hath honoured me of late;â⬠, but with his wifeââ¬â¢s repeated charges of being thought a coward he, like a hen-pecked husband, agrees to her plan. It is really after Banquoââ¬â¢s murder that his mental frailty is displayed. His visions of the mutilated corpse, that are only visible to him, unhinge him, but he shows perception in recognising that his murderous behaviour is out of the norm for him when he states, ââ¬Å"My strange and self-abuse Is the initiate fear that wants hard use: We are yet but young in deedâ⬠. He views himself as an amateur, but believes that with more murderous experiences the terrible visions will disappear. This is the crucial point at which the led becomes the leader. Macbeth now takes control of his own destiny while Lady Macbeth becomes the dependent casualty. From this realisation, Lady Macbeth assumes a lesser role in the play and fades into the background. Her rampant ambition and calculated plans have brought her no lasting joy or pleasure. Although she has achieved her dreams of being queen, her mental state is now of a tormented soul; she suffers from insomnia, is haunted by ghastly visions of the dead, performs an obsessional washing of hands, ââ¬Å"What, will these hands neââ¬â¢er be clean?â⬠and suicidal thoughts dominate her existence. It is here that she loses the tag of ââ¬Ëfiend-like queenââ¬â¢ and becomes more human in her inability to cope with what she has seen. Although she put in motion the sequence of events, she is now unable to cope with the consequences. The once proud, domineering woman has become a shadow;her spectral appearances in a nightgown carrying a candle show her changed into a waif like creature inhabiting the darker recesses of a turbulent mind. Itââ¬â¢s difficult not to feel some sympathy for her ââ¬Å"slumbery agitationâ⬠. This is no fiend but a troubled soul whose only hope of peace is death. While neither character is portrayed in an attractive light, Shakespeare graphically shows a descent into insanity and the ultimate tragic end in the quest for power. Against oneââ¬â¢s better nature, a degree of empathy for Macbeth and his wife emerges so that the label ââ¬Ëbutcherââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëfiend-like queenââ¬â¢ does not seem appropriate at the conclusion of the play.

From the Mouth of Harry S Truman
Harry S Truman served as the 33rd president of the United States during the end of World War II. The following are key quotes from Truman during his time as president. On War, the Military, and The Bomb In the simplest terms, what we are doing in Korea is this: We are trying to prevent a third world war. If there is one basic element in our Constitution, it is civilian control of the military. Sixteen hours ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima...The force from which the sun draws its powers has been loosed against those who brought the war in the Far East. It is part of my responsibility as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces to see to it that our country is able to defend itself against any possible aggressor. Accordingly, I have directed the Atomic Energy Commission to continue its work on all forms of atomic weapons, including the so-called hydrogen orà ââ¬â¹super-bomb. The Soviet Union does not have to attack the United States to secure domination of the world. It can achieve its ends by isolating us and swallowing up all our allies. On Character, America and The Presidency A man cannot have character unless he lives within a fundamental system of morals that creates character. America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and unbeatable determination to do the job at hand. Within the first few months, I discovered that being a President is like riding a tiger. A man has to keep on riding or be swallowed. Its a recession when your neighbor loses his job; its a depression when you lose yours.

Physics of Basketball Essay - 1867 Words
James Naismith, born 11/6/1861, in Almonte, Ontario, Canada invented the greatest game of all time. Basketball was invented December 1891 at a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Massachusetts. The game was invented to be an indoor game for students to play during the cold winter months since there were no previous indoor game that could involve a whole class. Basketball started out with only 13 rules that were made by Naismith in 1891 and the rules have continued to grow and change up to present day. The change that had the biggest impact on how basketball is played was the introduction of the three-point line. The three-point line started out as an experiment in college basketball in 1980 and was later adopted as a concrete part of theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Each team gets their own half to score A minimum of 10 players, five on each team is required for a game. A menââ¬â¢s basketball circumference is 29.5-30 and weighs usually 20-22 ounces while a womenââ¬â¢s basketball circumference is 28.5-29 and usually weighs 18-20 ounces. Only one ball is used in play. Games are played in four quarters in the NBA and high school and 2 halves in the college level. A quarter in the NBA has a 12 minute clock with game time lasting a minimum time of 48 minutes, a half in college is 20 minutes, allowing a minimum of 40 minutes playing time, and a quarter in high school goes for 8 minutes with minimum game of 32 minutes. Each player can play as long as they do not foul out. A NBA player has to sit down once reaching his 6th foul, and a college and high school player gets 5 fouls before having to sit down. A foul is when the defensive player has too much contact on the offensive player, or when the offensive player has a player control foul and knocks a stationary defender down. Points are counted by how many shots each team can make. When a player is fouled on a shot, or the team has bonus fouls from too many fouls from the other team, that player gets a free shot. This shot is shot on the free throw line and is worth one point. Two points are added when a shot is made within the three point line. The shot can be a dunk, lay-up, or jump shot.
